Biography

Nanette Newell is the former President and CEO of Naiad Technologies, Inc., an environmental technology firm specializing in reducing and solidifying toxic liquid wastes. From 1992 to 1995, Dr. Newell was the Executive Director of the Oregon Biotechnology Association and Foundation, private nonprofit groups responsible for economic development and education in biotechnology. From 1985 to 1995, Dr. Newell was also the President of Newell Consulting Group, a biotechnology consulting firm specializing in technical and strategic issues with expertise in agricultural, environmental, and health care areas.

From 1987 to 1991, she founded and helped build the Synertech Group, Inc., a business development group in Research Triangle Park, NC that grows new biotechnology companies. During that time, she founded and was the first President of EnSys, Inc., an environmental biotechnology company until recently traded on NASDAQ. From 1984 to 1985, she was Director of Research Administration and Regulatory Affairs at Calgene, a major agricultural biotechnology company. Dr. Newell was the Project Director for the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment's report entitled Commercial Biotechnology:  An International Analysis, published in 1984.

Dr. Newell received her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and her MBA at the Kenan-Flagler School, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
